RetroRelay

About the Project

RetroRelay is a J2ME application that brings everyday modern essentials to feature phones from the 2003-2013 era. Pair a handset by entering a 6-digit code from the web app and the phone gains authenticator code generation, current and forecast weather, and the ability to pair connected integrations, all delivered over the 2G networks these devices were built for.

In the UK, major networks like O2 maintain 2G coverage into the 2030s under smart-meter obligations, and many other countries still have 2G available. Many of the phones RetroRelay is built for still have other connection methods like Wi-Fi, even after 2G is gone.

RetroRelay is a way to give a second life to the billions of working retro phones still sitting in drawers and desk tidies across the world.
